The scheme of building a desktop computer, laptop or other electronic devices processing various types of data is quite complicated. RAM memory is one of the most important elements that affects the free operation of the entire computer, and also allows it to function in general. This type of digital memory is used in a variety of forms in a wide variety of applications. It is commonly used in computer components, such as processors, graphics cards or sound cards, as well as in programmers or other electronic devices that require data processing.
What is RAM?
Memory known as RAM is a type of digital memory. Its full name is Random Access Memory. Just like any digital memory, it is used to store data stored in binary form. In practice, it is a memory that is used to save data multiple times in situations where fast and unlimited access to it is needed. Various versions of RAM are used in electronics . These are:
- DRAM – dynamic memory,
- SRAM – static memory.
SRAM memory is characterized by the fact that it is much faster, and also does not require frequent refreshing. Therefore, it is used in systems where high speed of operation is crucial for the functioning of the system. DRAM memory is a bit slower and requires frequent refreshing, which can be considered a disadvantage in some situations. From the technological side, RAM functions as an integrated circuit. It is produced in different, slightly different technologies. When used in individual components, it is part of a larger integrated circuit. This type of memory can be persistent or volatile. Permanent memories are used in the following technologies:
- FRAM – a crystal is used as a data carrier.
- MRAM – magnetic tunnel connectors are used as a data carrier.
- NRAM – based on carbon nanotubes.
- PRAM – a crystal is used as a data carrier, but the design is different from FRAM.
Persistent memory is used where permanent data storage is required. Hence, they are used, for example, in modules that record the basic settings of a computer or electronic programmers. Non-volatile memories do not need power to keep a record. Volatile memories, on the other hand, lose data when power is lost. This is why all data stored in RAM is lost when the computer is powered off. Data loss occurs less than one second after power is disconnected. It is worth mentioning that RAM is the basis for a function used in operating systems to put the computer to sleep or put it into standby mode. All data from the programs you have worked with is saved in the cache RAM. The computer then shuts down, but uses a minimal amount of power, which only serves to provide a small voltage to the RAM, which requires a continuous power supply to avoid losing data. By unplugging your computer, even in standby mode, you will lose all your data. The exception is laptops that will draw power from the battery.

What is RAM memory for in computer components?
RAMin the SRAM version, it is mounted in computer components and is used to store data on which you are currently working. This type of memory is part of the entire processor or graphics card systems. What parameters they will present during operation depends on the amount of cache they have. Depending on how you use your computer on a daily basis, you should choose components that have enough cache memory. For easy office work that does not require the graphics card to work at high intensity, the amount of cache memory is secondary as it is likely to be sufficient anyway. If someone uses a computer to manipulate graphics or play computer games, the amount of cache memory should be relatively high. The same analogy applies to the processor and the analysis of its needs for the current and fast processing of large amounts of data.

What is RAM memory in a computer for?
RAM memory is also mounted on the motherboards of desktop computers or workstations. It is used there to store data from programs that are currently used on the computer. Working in any program, the results of work are saved in the RAM memory on an ongoing basis. If you want to keep this data permanently, you need to transfer it to another medium that will allow you to save the data and not lose it even in the event of a power failure. In computers, this function is performed by hard drives. Hence the fact that when working in office programs or playing computer games, the programs save the results of their work from time to time, and if you want to save the game, you have to do it manually and give the computer such a command. Otherwise, the data will not be available when the computer is turned off. This is where the computer program transfers data from RAM memory to the corresponding files saved on the hard disk, which can be used again later.
